LITERACY & NUMERACY NEWS

2024 has started with a bang at KPS! All of our classes settled in beautifully and jumped straight into their teaching and learning programs.

Kindergarten Koalas are settling into their classroom and their Year 1 friends are setting a great example as they learn about school routines, identifying beginning sounds in words and count with songs and movement. It’s so lovely to see their excitement at starting Big School.

1/2 Kangaroos are studying the beautiful texts ‘Welcome to Country’ and ‘I’m Australian Too’, exploring descriptive writing, Indigenous storytelling and publishing their personal stories. They have started new mathematics units involving exploration of numbers with concrete materials and rich problem solving tasks.

3-6 teachers have been busy over the break becoming familiar with, and planning to teach the new English Curriculum. This involves explicit teaching of reading, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and handwriting in literacy workshops, as well as five-weekly units focusing on understanding and responding to quality literature. For the first half of this term, 2/3 Possum’s are studying the text ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl, 4/5 Emu’s are studying ‘Blueback’ by Tim Winton and 5/6 Platypus’s are studying ‘The Wild Robot’ by Peter Brown.

This year we are excited to introduce differentiated mathematics lessons for primary. Our 2/3, 4/5 & 5/6 classes are mixed to better cater to our students' varied needs, so all students get more targeted lessons meaning everyone is supported and challenged.

We are so impressed with the way the students have focused on their learning in 2024. Have a look at these photos.

ATTENDANCE

Home Icon
Number 95 Percent

is our attendance goal!

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age of 17 years. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the NSW Education and Standards Authority for home schooling.

Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2024?

TARGETED MATHS GROUPS

We’ve spent the past year calculating and triangulating our data systems and processes so that we can better cater for our students in mathematics. In 2024, we venture into our first year of targeted maths groupings 2-6. You can be assured that students will be learning content to their level of need.

Rotations

In 2024, we are excited to begin whole school rotations (this includes reverse integration for our support class students). Students get to experience Art, Music, STEM, PE & Power Hour with teachers passionate about these subjects. There are some exciting projects in the works all while fostering relationships between students and staff across the school.
